Again, another old one, but I'm in love with it anyhow

18"x24" charcoal on drawing paper

We were working on portraiture and facial features hardcore... and I was tired of working from magazine photos like the teacher wanted, so I did my own thing.

Yeah, the shoulder is distended, I was just starting to work with the human anatomy. No way to fix it now (it's been sealed >.<;)

Comments appreciated!

Well, this is a traditional piece (no computer-ing at all except to crop the photo to a manageable posting size).

It's charcoal, which I find really easy to make into hair. Get a hard piece (HB or harder - HB makes it easier to get the soft blends between strands and stuff like 5H makes very defined individual strands). It also helps to have an artgum eraser. The way I did this, I drew a few guiding lines, then took an edge of the eraser and pulled the loose charcoal down over the paper. This makes a gradient/blend effect. If you do it over multiple, close lines, it makes a very realistic hair effect. If you accidentally make too many lines in the same area, all you have to do is go back in with your eraser and press hard with one of the corners and you can put highlights back in.

Glad you like it though n.n
And I hope that helps.
